The Brimfield Show

This past Wednesday I drove a U-Haul up to Brimfield, Massachusetts for their annual furniture show. Thousands of dealers gather there every year–it’s one of the biggest flea markets in the country. There are over twenty fields filled with vintage textiles, furniture, knick-knacks, and every type of antique you can imagine. It’s very exciting. Above is a selfie. I have my fanny pack on, tape measure in hand, and a list of what I’m looking for: an armchair, a bench, some dining room chairs. Etcetera.

What I love about Brimfield is the breadth of authentic, vintage pieces in one location. It gets the creative juices flowing. I spotted a few oversized chaise lounges and thought: how can we make these relevant in modern decor? Can we ditch the sofa-bed and replace it with a luxurious chaise lounge, perhaps upholstered in fur?

Brimfield is a magical–albeit sometimes overwhelming–event where you can find any kind of furniture you’re looking for, and then some. Lots of these pieces would have been destined for the dump if it weren’t for the kind and eccentric vintage carni-dealers, dedicated to lugging their treasures across the country.
