In February of 2020 I was laid off from my job in corporate fashion where I’d been a designer for almost 20 years. For those 20 years, I lived in Brooklyn but spent 60+ hours a week in Manhattan. At the end of my career in fashion, I was scheming about how I could one day work for myself.

Just a few months before I was laid off, I inherited an upholstered chair with caned sides from my grandmother. I spent more than a month picking fabric to reupholster my grandmother’s chair in. I was so excited to be able to keep my grandmother’s chair but make it look brand new. I was able to both salvage a family heirloom and put a chic new piece of furniture into my home. Since I started Double R Design, I’ve been doing this for other people.

Unlike working in fashion, I now spend all my time in Brooklyn. Working close to where I live is a privilege that has allowed me to become a member of several different communities. Communities of entrepreneurs and female designers and communities of parents and neighbors. Above is a photo from of a recent event at my studio with The Right At Home team from Compass. Carol Singh Alvarado and Maibe Ponet are two women who are part of my new Brooklyn community.
