How We Created an Instant Heirloom

When you hear the word ‘heirloom’ you think of a treasured item that’s been passed down from generation to generation. But might it be possible to create a family heirloom from scratch?

My clients had landed on the most cheerful hue of coral for their entryway. The dilemma was what to do for a bench. To play off the color of the walls we knew we wanted something vibrant and fun—but also durable, as they have three kids and this bench would be getting a lot of use. I had come across the London-based needlepoint design studio, Hunt & Hope, and shared their work with the client. We swooned over how the designers were able to transform needlepoint into modern and vibrant works of art. The entryway seemed like the perfect place to showcase a custom piece of needlepoint that was all about color and pattern.

On a trip to Broomfield I spotted a vintage wood-framed bench that had the most spectacular brass clawfeet and a carved mahogany frame. The measurements were right and I knew this was it. The upholstered top was the original needlepoint from at least 100 years ago, maybe more! It always amazes me how a piece of furniture can stay beautiful for a century. It was a coincidence that the top of the bench happened to be needlepoint but it was also a sign that quality hand stitched design has longevity. This was the perfect way to create a new family heirloom.

We decided to personalize the needlepoint by incorporating the family’s last name and the year of its creation. Almost like an engraved piece of silver, this bench stands as a true time capsule that will continue to live on in their family for decades to come.

How can you create an heirloom for your home?

  1. It’s all about the bones! If a piece of furniture has a solid frame and is made of real wood then that’s a great start. Try to find a base that is marked by a reputable furniture maker (a quick Google search will tell you if the furniture maker was legit.)
  1. Choose a fabric that evokes meaning and sentiment. I help my clients choose patterns or colors that speak to them and evoke feelings and memories.
  1. Personalization is a great way to leave a mark. We were thrilled to be able to add personalization to our needlepoint piece. You can also add a personalized embroidered patch or embossed leather patch.
  1. Make new memories! Your heirloom will be forever imbued with the essence of your life.
